WINTER READY – AUTUMN 2025

It’s been a while, too long really. I am not sure where the past years have gone. It has been a blur with the world feeling crazier than ever, both at home and abroad. My nervous system struggles to cope some days, keeping busy helps.

Paekakariki Art Show ANCHOR ME – KAPITI

2025 has been a mad dash since the start of the year with, an art show running earlier than usual, the house needing significant maintenance attention and painting, firewood sorting, autumn clean up, paths mowed, new tracks cut and paddock plantings beginning.

Looking west, late afternoon Summer 2025

Parts of the property are really beginning to feel forest like which is so exciting. When beginning this project a few years back, there was no real plan as to the how this might happen – other than planting as much as possible each year. Lots of weed eating, mowing, and digging. It helps to be stubborn thing.

At an art trail a few years back, I met and got talking to an inspiring couple – Joanne and Keith, they are passionate about the environment and planting natives – so much so that they began their own nursery to better facilitate plantings on their own property, and community plantings in Feilding.

Joanne and Keith have also generously helped over the past few years to add hundreds of plants, increasing diversity. I am so grateful and humbled by their ongoing support. Thank you so much.

This year the front paddocks are becoming easier to manage so planting has moved in to four of the back paddocks. This will be a big task, but it is exciting to think of how different it will look in just a few years time – as I write this 135 plants have gone into the ground.

First planting day for back paddocks

Who knows when the next update will appear – Top priority – many more plants to find homes. Then pruning fruit trees, and much processing of willow into firewood to be done. After that some studio time – with a plan to hunker down a bit over winter.

I hope this update finds you in good health, and enjoying creative pursuits. If you are still actually reading this, thank you,
Warmest regards Sam

Plant Count: easily 1200+ – have lost count at this point

PLANTING A FOREST/LOOKING AFTER A GARDEN
Since moving to Hendersons Line, Marton in June 2017 Sam and Lorraine have planted a huge number of native plants and trees. Eventually they hope to cover most of the site (4 acres) with a diverse mix of plants including plenty of food for the bees and birds, This will be combined with walking tracks and hidden spaces to just sit or stand, listen, catch a breath

Summer 2022

Summer is in full swing. Blue sky days, scorching afternoons with drying winds, it was a relief to wake to rainfall this morning, lovely and cool. Mostly Summer means watering when needed and trimming back/weeding. It has become unbearable to be out under the sun, I look forward to the shade of the trees as they grow.

The grass is sooo long! Yesterday paddock path trimming with the mower could not be delayed any longer. It was good to have a decent look around and see how all the new trees are doing. Most are surviving quite well.

The main focus at the moment is the annual garden with veggies in full swing, preserving is now top of mind. It is looking like a bumper crop of tomatoes after a very shaky start in the glasshouse with aphids devouring all young seedlings. Eventually the ladybirds moved in and the problem went away. Gherkins and chilli peppers are a new addition this year, and both are going well.

I have been fortunate with painting sales lately which is exciting because it has meant funds for more trees. I am so appreciative of those who buy my work and enable me to keep going. This morning I worked on a wish list for winter planting of bare root trees and have just sent it off to see what I can get! Each year I am trying to add more variety to the planting on site. I have reached my limit for where the natives will grow for now (even pioneers are struggling) so am looking further afield for the most difficult areas to plant. I still have 120 natives ready to go but missed the planting window so am keeping them watered and fed in the mean time – ready for autumn’s first big rain.

With recent sales the studio is looking truely sparse – bare walls are certainly good motivation to get cracking. I have six new paintings on the go with plenty more in the pipeline. Along with two upcoming group shows and one art trail, I am also working towards a solo show and contemplating a Rangitikei themed show, maybe with other locals. There is never nothing to do, that’s for sure.

Last but not least, Shilo a leggy 2 year old short hair black cat has joined our family recently, she came from the SPCA in Whanganui and seems to be fitting in well.

If you are here reading this, thank you,
Warmest regards Sam

Goodbye Gabby

We said goodbye to our Gabby on the 26th October 2021 at home on a sunny afternoon – we could not quite get you to another summer. Her resting place is just outside the studio and the sleepout – two of her favourite spots.

A one in a million loyal companion and the best studio manager a distracted creative could ever wish for.
“It still brings tears when I think of you not being here, so I have a jar that I put a pebble in each time I go to the studio to work Gabby, it makes me think of you walking me there each morning, and when the jar is full I will hopefully have a solo exhibition put together. I miss your eyes, and miss our cuddles, I will certainly miss you telling me to get my arse in the studio.”

Gabby, scabby gabby, diddums, princess gabby… you could not have been more loved. RIP sweet girl
