Painting
“Painting is an escape. It cuts out the noise of the day and gives me way of processing events and people. It is a quiet and solitary process that brings a sense of peace.
Work explores themes of life, unrest and dreams in stylized landscapes. Each environment is connected, moving and changing – balancing. Trees and plants twist and bend, reaching from an earth that sometimes falls away, rising up into swirling skies and starry nights. Water and air swirl and flow through day and night. A horizon is often visible and grounding – a sense of being home. In close up works, layers explore dark and light.
I like to use oil paints because they blend beautifully. Initial ideas are sketched out in black ink before being transferred to a canvas where the idea is able to develop. Strong colours are preferred, leaning towards reds, blues and greens. Areas are gradually blended and details added until the final painting emerges.”
